Cat out in the rain, dripping wet, Shivering, sad. Waiting to get in that house I visited. Are you safe and warm now. Did your owners come back or let you in? I would have taken you myself, blacks whites browns and oranges. If you were mine you would be snug and safe.
At least the rain stopped and the sun came out. Then, miracle, you sat in a pool of sunlight, rainbow hued, content with warmth.
Now wash yourself dry, find a quiet place and lie down and wait for them.
Dark continues to increase during the winter until two thirds of the way through December.
Today is the shortest day, the 21st this year. The least sunlight, the cold drifts in under the doors. Subtle shades of black cover the sky. The dawn seems a long way away. Lights twinkle through chilled air and a steady drizzle drives into every crevice, making clothes damp and uncomfortable.
That dark is such a contrast to 6 months ago when the temperature soared to over 30 degrees and the sun had barely set before it sprang back up again. Bathing in heat then, we now sit in yellowed gloom from cheap low energy light bulbs. Colours are washed out, paint seems hard to differentiate from colour to colour.
Is it any wonder that northern lands cling to the classic religions that celebrate their most important ceremonies at this time of year.
Wassail and messiahs meld into a grand charge against the darkness. Dragging us forward into the new year and the return of the Sun.
The sky was on fire a few minutes ago. Such a bright red, as if the clouds were on fire. Now its faded to a pale orange. I know its just the reflection of the sun’s rays below the horizon hitting the base of a layer of clouds but it was spectacular.
I don’t think my phone gives it a true sense of how bright and gorgeous it was but it captured it better than my old one would have. I guess it must have a more sophisticated apature control. On my old phone the red would just have appeared over exposed.
We have low pressure and winds from the north west are sweeping across the country. With the low sun earlier on there were huge dark clouds, laden with rain, waiting to drop onto already sodden ground. Peeking underneath the clouds a bright sun burst through and shone across the road. It turned the cloud base orange, but I could not see a rainbow, perhaps it was behind the buildings.
I took these photos. The tree across the road is in flower although its only December. It usually flowers in March.
Looking round the garden, we still have blue Lobelia flowers, also begonias, a fuchsia, a nasturtium.. these should be gone by now but it has been mild , too mild. ….
Talking about rainbows. Years ago I stepped out if college and onto the street. There was a sprinkling of rain, and dark clouds. The sun was low and bright. I saw a beautiful rainbow only a few yards in front of me. It was actually touching the ground. I did that thing you do in dreams, I chased it! I kept chasing and it kept moving away. In the end, after about 100 yards, I gave up. I just stood and marvelled at the beauty of it until it faded……
