Jupiter progress.

For some reason they came out opposite to how I posted them. Here are two parts of my Jupiter tryptich based on a photo Jupiter in the rear view mirror by Nasa. Taken as the Juno probe flew by Jupiter.

The challenge is to finish one panel by Friday. The other two will be painted on our Open days, 16th and 17th of November 2018 when we join with the Stoking Curiosity event. Run in conjunction with Keele University and Staffordshire University.  There are a series of talks and lectures over the two days based on the integration of art and science.

Given I love astronomy I decided on this subject. Forgetting that I don’t have a working printer and that my computer is on the blink. I have to thank Mike and Nick at Spode for printing me off black and white photos and then colour images. I would not have got this far without them….. So I’m struggling with the complexity of Jupiter. I’m working on an image from above one of the poles where the oranges and reds of the main bulk of the planet turn to sombre blues browns and dark greys.

My shoulders and arms ache. Although I’m just trying to get one panel finished I have to work across two of them so they fit together and I can orientate where the blotches and patterns are. Please don’t expect perfection..I will try to see how it comes out. If you are around Stoke for Stoking Curiosity come along. I will be in studio 21 at Spode.

Infinity ad infinitum

Sometimes I just think about big things, infinity, dark matter and dark energy. I don’t know much about them so I won’t try and lecture anyone about it. It’s just when you hear that the universe is flying apart more and more quickly and that the gravity that holds things together is not going to hold the universe together. There is something called dark matter which apparently helps hold the universe together, but there is also something called dark energy which is forcing it apart. So in the future the universe will spread out more and more till light cannot reach out and darkness will descend as the universe cools …

So that’s cheerful….

Also the idea that the universe splits each time something happens befuddles me. So if a car crashes in one universe it might not in the next. Terry Pratchett the author wrote about going down the wrong trouser leg of time. Each split can split again and again, ad infenitum.

Maybe all the dark matter and energy is the other universes effecting us? I don’t know. I like thinking about things but I don’t always understand them.

 

Time Ticks

PicsArt_1536439451689It does! I started writing this over 12 hours ago but then the battery on my tablet went flat so I had to wait until now .

Anyway, time does tick by, sometimes I know exactly when the alarm is going to go off, and it does. I can wake up a second before the alarm clock goes off….nothing is clicking or whirring or spinning to give me a cue or a clue. Same with the alarm on our oven, last night I got up from my chair to check it just before it went off.

One explanation is the brain has tiny cells beating regularly giving us a sense of time. There are also electric nodes in your heart that regulate your heartbeat, and your breathing is a regular rhythm allowing you to get just the right amount of air.

But what is time, why do we feel times arrow? Why does a cup fall and then break as it hits the floor? Why isn’t it on the floor then bouncing back up onto the table, reforming from smashed to solid in a second? There is something called entropy, everything breaks down over time. Everything tends towards chaos. The Universe is cooling, as space expands. Astrophysicists speak of the heat death of the universe as everything spreads out and cools towards absolute zero. Galaxies are flying away from each other. If things continue, in many billions or trillions of years, we would have completely black skies, no stars in sight. Our Sun will have cooled to a husk of burnt matter and all the other Stars will fly off away for us. There is something called red shift, as galaxies move away their light shifts towards the red end of the spectrum, the larger the red shift the faster they are moving. There are theories about things called dark energy and dark matter that try to explain this, but I wouldn’t know where to start with that aspect of space time.

Time ticks for everything, although time may not actually exist, it might just be our way of measuring the passing of things happening, but not understanding the universe. But if it is real there may be an advantage of time. The end of the universe or more likely its continuous, infinite existence, will not happen in our time. But a long long long time in the future.

 

A carpet of dasies

White and yellow daisy type flowers remind me of sunshine. The dark leaves could be space and the greenery earth. Strange how a picture of petals and leaves make me think if the universe.

We need light to live. Heat from the sun warms us enough to keep the planet temperate. Light allows plants to photosynthise and create Oxygen. Without sunlight we would just be a lump of rock and frozen gasses in the infinity of space.

But it goes further than that…. the first chemical that was present after the big bang, was Hydrogen. Atoms of hydrogen were pulled together by gravity to form stars. Stars are nuclear reactors, the more hydrogen they gather from surrounding clouds of gas, the heavier they get. Eventually nuclear fusion begins and the stars light up. Hydrogen atoms join together and create Helium….

After a while (a few billion years) the stars will have converted most of their Hydrogen to Helium, and further pressure changes that to heavier atoms, from Carbon, upwards in increasing atomic weight. Eventually the star is a cinder of Iron.

But once a star is mainly burning Iron atoms, it needs to use more energy to turn the Iron into heavier elements than the Iron can provide. The energy from it also helps keep the layers of material in the star supported, or expanded. The pressure of radiation and photons of light hold the layers of star plasma up.

Then the star uses up all its fuel . If it is small nothing much may happen and it just burns out. But if it is large enough the pressure from radiation and light is not enough to hold up against the force of gravity which is trying to make it collapse.

The inward pull of gravity can make all the atoms collapse inwards, making a neutron star. A tiny ball of it will weigh a massive amount.

But if the old star is heavy enough it continues to collapse, then the energy created by the collapse can cause the stars outer layers to explode outwards. This may be a Nova, or Supernova. Supernovae create a flash of light that can be as bright  as a whole galaxy.

If the star was even bigger it can collapse completely and create a black hole. In that case the gravity of the black hole will not allow matter or light that comes close to it to escape. There is a complete absence of light.

Apologies to the physicists, chemists and biologists out there for my rambling explanation. I’m short on facts and figures but I do like to think about these things.
